Practical Information
General
Opera in the Otways is an open air event in a natural amphitheatre in front of Australia’s most significant lighthouse.
What to Bring
CLOTHES: Please bring warm clothes & sensible footwear. Keep an eye on the weather forecast.
SEATING: We encourage you to bring picnic blankets and low level beach style chairs. The ground is sloping so normal picnic chairs may not be suitable. There will be limited seating provided for those less able than they would like to be and who are not comfortable with sitting on the ground or on low chairs.
Food & Drink
There will be food stalls available all day – providing a wonderful range of locally-produced Otway food and wine. The Lightkeeper’s Café will also be open.
Picnic Passes are available for purchase in advance. This gives you a set of discounted vouchers for you to choose on the day from a selection of main meals; desserts; beer, wine or cordial; tea & coffee. Also included is a FREE Opera in the Otways can cooler. The cost is $30 per person and you can buy them online or call the Lightstation on 03 5237 9240.
Please remember that alcohol cannot be brought into the venue. We will be running a bar. A selection of local beer and wine providers will be on hand, with Otway Estate Winery & Brewery providing the main bar.
Money
Note that there is no ATM at the Lightstation, so please bring cash for the food stalls. The Lightstation kiosk & café do accept EFTPOS, but there is no cash out facility.
After Dark
The Lightstation will be open until after sunset so patrons are encouraged to linger after the opera and enjoy the grounds. The café will remain open, where dinner can also be purchased – please book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Parking
Ample car parking is available inside the Lightstation grounds.
Times
Cape Otway Lightstation is open from 9am. We encourage you to arrive early to enjoy all that the historic precinct has to offer.
Please arrive early enough to give yourself plenty of time to collect your wristband, park & walk to the event.
The Opera in the Otways show begins at 2pm and runs until 6pm. There will be roving performers from 2pm and Victorian Opera perform from 4pm.
The Lightstation will be closed to the general public from 3.45pm until the 6pm. Only Opera ticket-holders will be admitted during this time.
The Lightstation will then become open again to the general public until sunset.
Tickets
The Ticketing Counter is located at the entrance to the Lightstation. Patrons must provide proof of ticket purchase to get their wristbands, in order to gain entry to the onsite car parking area. Each ticket holder must be wearing a wristband to gain entry to the main area for the performance.
Patrons who do not have proof of ticket purchase – e.g. you have purchased your ticket from the Lightstation or you are an invited guest – should show identification and collect their wristbands from the ticketing counter.
